From the Prez……

Spring Greetings!
First off, thanks to Ted H. for arranging the meeting room at Casper’s. Also thanks to the members who attended the meeting.

I noticed Norm drove his ‘56 Chev. I am not sure if spring has arrived yet but I’ve been fighting the bug to start prepping my yard and gardens. I’ve seen several motorcycles, hot rods and classics on the roads already. I can only assume most of you members have started dusting off your vehicles, getting the batteries installed, and taking care of any finishing touches.

At the April meeting I sold one t-shirt and had one denim shirt returned. The denim shirt in question fit our club member in the arms and shoulders but the body of the shirt was way too short so it ended up looking like a long-sleeved tank top. “Too bad, so sad”—not a great visual knowing how some of our members tend to be a bit broad around the belly like me.

Thank you goes to Jim and Lavon B. for allowing the club trailer to be parked at their place. Jim must have a problem patch of lawn he doesn’t want to deal with.

It’s official…another GSTA show is in the record books and what an incredible display CLEM and Chopper put together. Many, many folks stopped to comment on the two beautiful Corvettes and even more complimented the display, the back-drop, the photos, stands, Burma-Shave signs and how well everything fit together. If you missed the show, you missed a great set-up, display, and cars.

Both Corvettes were built by Chopper and each won trophies in their classes. The 1957 Corvette is owned by Sheldon H. and the 1960 is owned by Chopper. Special thanks to Chopper for working day and night for weeks to have his car ready for the show. Thanks also to his wife, Julie, who kept Chopper caffeinated and fed during the push to complete his car. At the same time CLEM was getting the display parts made and collected. The result was “WOW”! Please thank members CLEM and Chopper when you see them for all their work, skills, and imagination. Thanks also to the members who helped with set-up, tear-down, and manning the table during the show.

The May meeting will be at Cam’s hosted by NORM. I’ll see you folks on the 6th.

Dan

Minutes
Minutes From The Meeting On April 1st, 2017

President:

Dan B. called the meeting to order at 7:01pm. He thanked Ted H. for organizing the meeting place and thanked everyone (39) for coming out. He also mentioned that next month’s meeting will be hosted by Norm R. at Cam’s.

Secretary:

Dan called on Renita. She explained she had some computer trouble and was under some duress as she retyped the entire Chevroletter late one night. She also noted that she is really just the interim secretary. With that, Jerene A. made a motion to approve last month’s meeting minutes. Ted seconded the motion to accept the minutes as published.

Vice-President:

Don was not to be seen but the belief was he is now in Minnesota.

Treasurer:

Jerene reported last month’s beginning and ending balances. She explained that one sponsor and one member’s dues had been collected. Also money was deposited from the merchandise sale. The only expense was the printing and mailing of the newsletter. Deposits exceeded expenses.

Editor:

Renita handed out the latest roster but explained there were still a number of members on the list who have not paid their dues. She plans on deleting those who have not paid before the updated roster is uploaded to the website.

Membership:

Bill M. announced the attendance as 39 members or 24 units. Bill continued to sign in all members and asked how the group liked this method. The members agreed with this type of record-keeping rather than passing a sign-in sheet around.

Web Master:

Shelly was not present tonight.

Sunshine Report:

Marge was not present either.

Historian Report:

Kirby is still out of touch but Laureen told everyone that Kirby called to say ‘hi’ and they will be here soon.

Committee Report:

GSTA:

Chopper said they are ready for the car show. They could still use some help on Saturday and Sunday. He asked for those who are setting up to be there by 10am. Dan told everyone that he will be at the show both Saturday and Sunday to help at the Chevy’s Best area.

There are discount tickets online and the parking is free.

Sweet Summer Nights:

Dan said there will be a short board meeting after the regular meeting to talk about trophies, dash plaques, and other ideas. He did not receive any ideas from the group. He asked again for input as the car show is a few months away.

New Business:
June Meeting:

Ted asked how many members were planning on going to Morristown for the car show and June meeting. In past years those traveling to Morristown have met, ate breakfast, and caravanned to the car show in Morristown. He’d like a count in a month or so to alert the Perkins in Savage (corner of #13 and #42) so they can prepare a space for us. Ted asked Boyd or Bill (whoever is there first) to lead the convoy down south.

Honor Flight:

Ted announced that he won’t be at the May meeting because he’ll be with an Honor Flight. He invited everyone to come over to the Humphrey Terminal (#2) to welcome the veterans’ home. It is an experience you won’t forget!

Sheldon asked if we hadn’t in the past donated some funds to Ted to cover his expenses for the Honor Flight. Bill made a motion for the club to donate $250 to cover some of Ted’s expenses.
Sandy (former treasurer) realized that we did in the past donate money to Ted but it was in error of the club’s non-profit status. Due to this, the club is not able to directly benefit any person financially. So we have been in error and she apologized for this past practice. Bill revised his original motion to instead donate $250 to the Honor Flight organization. Dan asked if this would be appropriate. Sandy agreed it would. Jerene seconded the motion to donate the funds to the Honor Flight organization. All were in favor. Motion passed.

Steak Fry:

Ted thanked those who came last week (March 29) to the steak fry in Crystal at the VFW. This event occurs every 5th Wednesday in those months with five Wednesdays. Many in attendance didn’t know anything about the steak fry and asked for it to be announced in the newsletter. The next month with five Wednesdays is May. We’ll get back to Ted for particulars.

Old Merchandise:

Dan mentioned there still are some shirts available so see him after the meeting.

Tri-Five Nationals:

Steve N. asked if anyone else was going to Bowling Green in mid-August for the tri-five car show. He said he and JP, Mike R., Dan B., and Larry Haugen are driving down. This event is Friday, August 11 and Saturday, August 12 at the Beech Bend Raceway. Registration is only for tri-five owners.

Meeting Adjourned:

Jerene made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 7:22pm and Brian M. seconded the motion.

Respectfully submitted,
Renita Dellwo, (your interim--really)
Secretary

MAY BIRTHDAYS

2 - Mike J. 6 - Lea R.
(If we missed your birthday this month, or if you don't want your birthday listed at all, please let the editor know to update our records.)

Editor's Notes

Honor Flight: Ted H. is again a guardian on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. on Saturday, May 6 (our meeting date). The flight returns to Humphrey Terminal (terminal 2 or the small terminal) at approximately 10:20pm. If you have time, join others for the Homecoming Party to greet the returning WWII and Korean Veterans from an emotional day of visiting their memorials in our nation’s capital. For more information go to www.honorflighttwincities.org.

A Touch of Country Class Boutique: Some of the members attended this craft show two or three years ago when it ‘accidentally’ coincided with Steve’s June meeting and car show in Morristown. This year, sadly, it does not. However, the dates are Thursday, May 18 – Sunday, May 21 and Thursday, May 25 - Monday, May 29. Hours are 9am - 7pm daily. It would be a great road trip and fun day. The parking lot is grass and there are eight buildings full of stuff (even some man-cave things)! The address is 41830 150th Street, Waseca, MN but it’s only about four miles south of Morristown. I will pass out some postcards at the meeting.

Old Merchandise: We are going to have SALE Part 3 at the May meeting. There aren’t many items left and they are a bargain. Shirts are $5 and sweatshirts are $10!! Mens Cotton Polo Shirts Light Blue: two large, two XL, Mens Cotton Polo Shirt Medium Blue: one XL, Mens Cotton Polo Shirt Medium Grey: one XL, Grey Sweatshirt: one L, Grey Hooded Sweatshirt: one L, Grey Mens T-Shirts: two XXL

Kirby was spotted somewhere on Highway 61, headed north to Hastings. Welcome Back! (I have to mention the photo is from the CB Archives and I need to acknowledge Jim S. just in case he’s copyrighted this image.)

Historian:

Kirby was spotted somewhere on Highway 61, headed north to Hastings. Welcome Back! (I have to mention the photo is from the CB Archives and I need to acknowledge Jim S. just in case he’s copyrighted this image.)

Lookout Show: The first Car Cruise Night is Wednesday, May 17. Cars and drivers start rolling in about 4pm or so and stay to chat and eat until dark. The new hosts this year are Don and Lavon. Doesn’t that have a nice ring to it? Don and Lavon are not married to each other however. Don and Carolea are a couple and Lavon and Jim are the other couple. Carolea and Jim will not be far away and will also be assisting with crowd control. For the Norwegians in the group, this is the Norwegian holiday of Syttende Mai (17th of May) declaring Norway’s independence and everyone knows how ‘independent’ a Norwegian can be! (Editor’s note: I am 100% Norwegian).

Crystal VFW Update: I spoke with Ted H. the day of printing this newsletter. The Crystal VFW is no longer going to have the steak fry on the 5th Wednesday of the month and that’s that.

Tidbit from Tom:

(Thank you Tom L. for this contribution!)

Heavens to Murgatroyd!..Would you believe the email spell checker did not recognize the word, Murgatroyd?  Lost Words from our childhood: Words gone as fast as the buggy whip!  Sad really!

The other day a not so elderly (65) (I say 75) lady said something to her son about driving a Jalopy and he looked at her quizzically and said, “What the heck is a Jalopy?” OMG (new) phrase!  He never heard of the word jalopy!!  She knew she was old but not that old.

Well, I hope you are Hunky Dory after you read this and chuckle.

About a month ago, I illuminated some old expressions that have become obsolete because of the inexorable march of technology. These phrases included “Don’t touch that dial,” “Carbon copy,” “You sound like a broken record” and “Hung out to dry.” Back in the olden days we had a lot of moxie.  We’d put on our best bib and tucker to straighten up and fly right.

Heavens to Betsy! Gee whillikers! Jumping Jehoshaphat! Holy Moley!

We were in like Flynn and living the life of Riley, and even a regular guy couldn’t accuse us of being a knucklehead, a nincompoop or a pill.  Not for all the tea in China!

Back in the olden days, life used to be swell, but when’s the last time anything was swell?
Swell has gone the way of beehives, pageboys, and the D.A.; of spats, knickers, fedoras,  poodle skirts, saddle shoes and pedal pushers.

Oh, my aching back.  Kilroy was here, but he isn’t anymore. We wake up from what surely has been just a short nap, and before we can say, well I’ll be a monkey’s uncle!  Or, this is a fine kettle of fish! We discover that the words we grew up with, the words that seemed omnipresent as oxygen, have vanished with scarcely a notice from our tongues and our pens and our keyboards.

Poof, go the words of our youth, the words we’ve left behind. We blink and they’re gone.  Where have all those phrases gone?

Long gone: Pshaw. The milkman did it. Hey!  It’s your nickel. Don’t forget to pull the chain.
Knee high to a grasshopper. Well, Fiddlesticks! Going like sixty. I’ll see you in the funny papers.
Don’t take any wooden nickels.

It turns out there are more of these lost words and expressions than Carter has liver pills.  This can be disturbing stuff!

We of a certain age have been blessed to live in changeable times.  For a child, each new word is like a shiny toy, a toy that has no age.  We at the other end of the chronological arc have the advantage of remembering there are words that once did not exist and there were words that once strutted their hour upon the earthly stage and now are heard no more, except in our collective memory.  It’s one of the greatest advantages of aging.

See ya later, alligator!
